After idol went off last night, I watched this show called Brave new voices on HBO. In a nutshell, it is about youth groups from all over the world doing spoken word to win a contest. First of all, let me just say that intense does not describe this show. Those kids expressed their feelings and opinions on topics as simple as dinosaurs to more difficult topics like losing your soul and not being able to find it. Every emotion you could possibly think of was shown in the hour or so that I watched. The audience was made up peers, friends, enemies, adults, and non believers. There was clapping, waving, yelling, beating, cursing, snapping, and standing ovations while the individuals or groups were on stage letting it all hang out. Putting themselves so far out there, that nothing would be able to pull them back. At one point, I don't even think I was breathing. The truth is hard to digest sometimes. We have all at some point in our lives dismissed, rejected, or ignored a truth that would haunt or annoy us. For these kids, the truth was all they spoke. You could tell by the pauses they took to breathe, the shaking of their hands, and by the tone of their voices that reality was all they spoke. I was thinking as the credits were rolling on the black screen while the kids continued to speak that it is crazy how people so young can say what they mean, and mean what they say and there are adults out there that don't even remotely understand that concept. What do you do? Do you confront, ignore, belittle, or slander them? Should you do nothing?
